Summer on Whidbey Island is nearly impossible to beat! We're so thankful for the chance to slow down a bit, focus on enjoying our children and the beautiful place where we live.

As much as we love to soak in the less chaotic times on the farm, we have had a few big summer projects on our plate — most notably, a total barn overhaul and clean out. When our family moved here in 2021, we combined 3 households onto one property, which resulted in many, many, MANY moving boxes being stored in the barn with only a hazy idea of what may be inside of them. Finally, 5 years later, we have a usable space for farm projects. We can't wait to be able to utilize this space for wreath making and possible freelance vendors in the upcoming tree farm season.

With so many new subscribers, I thought it was about time to re-introduce ourselves and share the story of how we turned our lives upside in order to operate a Christmas tree farm on an island in northwestern Washington.

The team behind Good Boy Farms is made up of three families: Dave and Janet Yumen with their kids, Chris and his wife, Nicole, and Kristi and her husband, Josh. In 2020, we were located in three different corners of the country.  When many were taking up birdwatching and sourdough baking, we began dreaming of living together on the same piece of land (or at least within the same state). What began as a 5-year plan pipe dream became more and more of an exciting possibility as COVID changed certain policies that would open doors for remote work and we began looking for the perfect place to put down roots. We did not set out looking for a Christmas tree farm but when we first visited the property and saw the beautiful water and mountain views, the established garden and chicken coop, and learned that the property was already zoned for another house to be built, we jumped in and decided we could learn on the fly. None of us had ever worked with trees before or could even name more than two species of fir tree. It was an insane, life-changing decision and we knew we were in for a steep learning curve. 

We are incredibly thankful to the community of Oak Harbor for supporting us and loyally coming to see us every year, as well as for having grace and patience for us as we learned. We are still far from experts (Case in point: We just broke our first tractor this year), but the challenge of operating the farm together is one that has been deeply sanctifying and rewarding over the past five years.

  A N N U A L   O R N A M E N T

Another project currently in the works is designing our 2026 annual ornament! If you've been following along with us for the past few years, you'll know that we design a unique ornament every year as a fun collectible and way to commemorate each season. It has been a fun challenge to make the ornament better and better each year! Stay tuned for a sneak peek at the 2026 ornament.
